Higher Education and Sustainability: Putting the Pieces in Place
March 28-29, 2007, Belmont University

Highlights

The Belmont Conference drew over 140 participants from 20 higher education institutions in Tennessee.  A highlight of the Conference was the Presidents’ Signing Ceremony, in which President Robert Fisher of Belmont and five other campus leaders formally signed the Talloires Declaration, a document that commits campus leadership to fulfilling the key principles of sustainability.  Leaders from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Fisk University, Meharry Medical College, Nashville State Community College and the American Baptist College joined President Fisher in the signing.  In addition to presentations on sustainability progress being made across Tennessee higher education institutions, Wynn Calder of the University Leaders for a Sustainable Future (ULSF) and Tom Kimmerer of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) made plenary presentations.
